Simple and organized images, with an overall sense of peace and stillness, depict Tony Howell’s love for landscape photography. Howell was born on January 13, 1960 in Plymouth, Devon, England. He is one of England’s well-known photographers of landscape.
In an interview, Howell was asked why he took up photography, and answered: “First of all my father gave me a Kodak Instamatic. I took sunrises and sunsets. Then a friend showed me a photography magazine. I looked at some of the images and thought ‘I could have taken that’ – so I got a better camera. Suddenly I saw the world with new eyes. I was hooked right from the start.”
He started taking photographs in 1978. Howell’s images have been used in numerous books, calendars, magazines, on BBC TV, Hollywood movies, billboards, brochures,
catalogues, greeting cards, posters, postcards, websites, national newspapers and others. His clients include: National Geographic, The BBC, Christies, Royal Mail, The Tate, The National Trust, Penguin Books, Unicef, The Forestry Commission, and many more.
Howell’s work is easily recognizable. The Shutterbug Magazine examines his work by “The natural world captured by a master photographer.”
His photography caught my eye because of its simplicity. My attention was trapped by the unity of the pictures. I felt the calmness and tranquility. When reviewing Howell’s gallery, I noticed his compassion for landscape. I recognized his effort of timing, lighting, and composition.
I hope to mimic Tony Howell’s images as I encounter compelling landscape.
